Start with the building
A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it through combustion. It works most efficiently when delivering water at a lower temperature over longer periods. That makes the building’s heat loss and emitter size central to comfort. Ask for a room-by-room heat-loss calculation and the proposed design temperature. Some homes need larger radiators or targeted insulation; others can use much of the existing system. The answer should come from measurement, not a rule of thumb.
The grant is not the quote
As of July 2026, Ofgem lists substantial Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants for eligible systems, with values depending on technology and property. Households should confirm current eligibility. Compare quotes after the grant and check whether electrical work, hot-water storage, radiator changes, planning issues and disposal are included. A cheap price with an underspecified design can be expensive to correct. The installer should explain assumptions rather than simply promise that the old boiler disappears.
Calculate cost honestly
Weather compensation can adjust flow temperature as outdoor conditions change, supporting steady and efficient operation. Smart controls are valuable when they make a sound design easier to run; an app cannot rescue poor hydraulic balancing. Running cost depends on seasonal efficiency, electricity tariff and the fuel being replaced. A performance figure from one mild day is not an annual result. The best installation feels unremarkable: warm rooms, understandable bills and equipment operating inside a well-explained design.
