Why 6 GHz matters
The 6 GHz band offers cleaner airwaves and room for wider channels than crowded 2.4 GHz spectrum. Wi‑Fi 7 devices can use multiple links and more efficient scheduling, creating lower latency and higher capacity under the right conditions. Gains are not automatic. Both router and client need compatible radios, and higher-frequency signals lose strength more quickly through distance and walls. A fast standard cannot repair poor access-point placement.
A British sharing decision
In July 2026, Ofcom set out a framework for sharing the upper 6 GHz band between commercial mobile and Wi‑Fi. Wi‑Fi receives priority in the lower 160 MHz, while mobile receives priority across the upper 540 MHz, with technical coordination intended to make coexistence possible. The decision reflects competing demand: Wi‑Fi carries enormous indoor traffic, while mobile operators want mid-band capacity for future networks.
Buy the network as a system
Dense offices, campuses and studios may benefit first. Homes with gigabit broadband, local media or wireless virtual-reality workloads can benefit when compatible devices are nearby. Check which bands a product supports, whether wired ports can carry the advertised speed and how long it will receive security updates. Multi-gigabit wireless paired with a one-gigabit backhaul simply moves the bottleneck. Standards provide capability; layout turns it into experience.
